This book has above all a superb pedagogical vocation; that is to say it is extremely useful for any introductory course of French literature given at an Anglophone university. It is clear and easy to read for the student who is not a native French speaker. First published in 1788, it provides a remarkable portrait of the state of mind of the French aristocracy on the eve of the Revolution. At the same time it contains a remarkable synthesis of the beliefs and doctrines of the Enlightenment philosophers. For a book that is short and quickly read it offers remarkable value.I hope that "Paul et Virginie" stays on the undergraduate program for French Lit majors at English-Speaking universities for a long time to come. There is really no other book that tells the Anglophone reader so much about the "Siècle des lumières" in such a brief lapse of time.
