Excerpt from The House of the Wolf: A Romance

Francois Villon, man-oi - letters, poet, vagabond, and thief, becomes involved in a tavern brawl, where murder is done. Terror-stricken and penniless, he flies into the winter streets of Paris, dreading pur suit and seeking shelter. Perishing with cold and hunger, he knocks at a house where a light is shin ing, and craves succor. Ah old knight admits him, warms him and feeds him, and discourses with him curiously upon poverty and honor, the distinction between soldiers and thieves, until the vagabond poet's impudence and effrontery so excite the ire of the old noble that he turns out the shameless one.
