"Tragedy rewritten as farce," globalization and changing social norms in the post-Cold War era intersect with compelling family drama and a portrait of a debilitating mental illness, all coming to a head in a Christmas at the Lamberts' home in St. Jude, Missouri. Franzen drew heavily on his father's experience with Alzheimer's in his depiction of Alfred Lambert, who has Parkinson's disease.
