This is a great little book that I have never been able to find since I bought it for a dollar at a local bookstore. I really hope it hasn't gone out of print, because I want to buy tons of copies to donate to libraries. It's a straightforward story of a 17 year old woman from a working class community and the first few years of her life with her baby. I enjoyed it because of the pragmatic protagonist, the lack of histrionics in telling the story, although the story itself is in no way understated or downplayed; she and the baby face very serious challenges and do not have an easy time. I feel this book would be great for teen parents or teen parents-to-be. The author really speaks to these readers, at times suggesting better decisions she could have made (hitch-hiking with her baby, for instance, allowed her to get out of some very bad situations, but she notes that it could be dangerous and suggests some other alternatives) without moralizing or speaking down. She suggests lots of resources and tips for parents in her situation. The best part for me is that this is not a story of teenage pregnancy that ends at the birth of the baby, but a story that keeps going and going, just as all our lives do. What an awesome find.
