When Barbara Pym died in 1980 she left a considerable amount of unpublished material. This volume brings together one complete novel, Civil to Strangers, and sections of three others which have been meticulously edited to form self-standing novellas that rank with the best of Barbara Pym's other work. The title novel is the story of Cassandra and her self-absorbed writer husband Adam, a young couple from a small British village. Cassandra dutifully panders to her husband's whims and fancies, wondering all the time to herself if this is the right thing to do. Viewed locally as some sort of a genius due to his flamboyant dress and imperious manner, Adam is not, in fact, particularly talented: he is both petulant and lazy. However, both the village and Cassandra's marriage are thrown into upheaval when a mysterious Hungarian moves into town. . .
