"But what a lot of time we waste, Lucy, when we won't forgive. I never had much book learning and your Granny could say it a lot better than I could, but it seems to me that every hour when we won't love and forgive, is an hour of life wasted." This is very moving. Lucy lives with her Grandparents although she doesn't know why. She fends off the comments from her school friends but in the process becomes curious. Where are her parents? Where did she come from? What of the fading memory of a tall man playing games with her when she was very young. Gradually, she pieces her past together, but is it too late for things to be made right, for relationships to be restored? What about the most important friendship of all?Patricia St John tackles difficult subjects with sensitivity and authenticity. There is nothing contrived about this story. I could imagine a child thinking along exactly the same lines as Lucy throughout this tale. The Christian theme underpins this story. The attempt is to introduce the reader to Jesus in a natural way. The only problem with this approach is the full Gospel is not presented. The characters who are already Christian see their faith as something private. Those who become Christians seem almost to get caught up in a divine whirlwind realising their need of a Friend in Jesus. He meets the needs that they have as they are overwhelmed by His great love for them. This is only half of the message; Jesus died for our sin and rescued us from the punishment we deserve. There is nothing said about sin or repentance, this is unfortunate.Despite the Gospel lacking crucial elements, this is a well-written story that can introduce children to aspects of Christianity, and teach them about love and forgiveness.
