The narrator's voice didn't quite ring true to me in terms of a kid actually thinking that, say, splashing noises from a neighbor's house meant they were busy washing an elephant. That's like a story a kid would make up, not what they'd really think. But I'm willing to give benefit of the doubt that maybe there was implicitly a not-mentioned auditor, such as a parent urging the child to go meet the new kid. The illustrations are lovely, and I liked the contrasting pages of what is imagined with the elephant versus the quotidian actuality.
