I was only going to give this book three stars, because, like most anthologies, it's really up and down. It had some five star poems, but it also had some two star poems. But then there are the thoughts on poetry by the poets. I don't feel like they talk down to kids (some of them kind of do, but most of them don't.) Instead, they're truly thoughtful and interesting pieces. Paul B. Janeczko wrote the first book on writing that I ever read, How to Write Poetry. And, though I will never be a poet, that book had a huge impact on me. And I think this one has the power to do the same. It makes you think about the possibility of you writing a poem, and start brainstorming ideas. It's inspiring. And some of the poems are truly beautiful. This is a collection I would like to own.
