When the Sloan Guaranty Trust was approached about investing in Michigan Motors, one of the Big Four of the American car industry, the Sloan's senior vice-president, John Putnam Thatcher, was not convinced. The previous year, three of Michigan MOtors' executives had been jailed following a scandal over price fixing and now they were due for release, there was some doubt as to whether or not they would be reinstated. When one of the convicted men turns up murdered in a luxury limousine at a press conference, Thatcher finds the role of detective thrust upon him again . . .
