Since her first novel, Honour Thy Father, in 1990, Lesley Glaister has been hailed by critics and readers alike on both sides of the Atlantic as "a shrewd observer of domestic minutiae as well as emotional nuances" (Publishers Weekly) and as "a true original . . . [her] writing is seductive, relaxed and assured" (The Sunday Times - London). With Limestone and Clay, Lesley Glaister shows an even greater emotional range and concern as she tells the story of Nadia and Simon. Nadia is a potter who has recently lost a baby in a miscarriage and desperately yearns for a child, while again and again having to endure dashed hopes. Simon, a geography teacher, is frustrated at being unable to help with Nadia's infertility without finding himself sinking into depression and self-doubt. So instead, he directs his thoughts to his one obsession: exploring caves. Their relationship has struggled along as such until we join them: when, in one terrible night and day, a secret that Simon has kept is revealed by a jealous ex-girlfriend. This leads Nadia and then Simon to attempt to satisfy their own dark obsessions, which they themselves do not understand. It leaves them to individually encounter all that has been haunting them, and to determine in some unquantifiable way what their relationship means to them when faced with what every relationship faces: the unknown. Lesley Glaister has once again achieved in Limestone and Clay a remarkably true and moving account of people facing their own darkest fantasies while fiercely trying to hold on to those they love.
