Professor Alistair Dirke thought of himself as a reasonable man. He has had a satisfactory career, is happily married to Rose, and living in a pleasant country village not too far from the city. He is taken aback by his unreasonable feelings of jealousy relating to Paul(who does seem to be spending a lot of time with Rose). On the suggestion of a friend he goes to visit an elderly Greek coin collector who has a rare collection of coins only to find the old man dead and the collection missing. He must apply his reason to unravel the unreasonableness of the events.
