In the machismo culture of Mexico in the 1960's, a gringo is simply an American tourist; a gringa is something of even less worth, someone to be more cruelly exploited. Abilene "Abby" Painter is that gringa, a pretty twenty-five-year-old Texan who has drifted into an abusive, torrid relationship with a famous Mexican bullfighter, Antonio Velez. She knows little of what she wants who she is, or where she's going in life, seemingly stuck in a lethargy of sex and casual encounters from which she cannot escape.
